General Catalog
Annual research conference on major global health issues.

It has been claimed that war accounts for more death and disability than many major diseases combined (Levy and Sidel, 2008). World wars with millions of casualties are fading from global memory. New forms of armed conflict and civil war have steadily increased, disrupting fragile health infrastructures, and bringing death and injury to combatants and civilians alike. This conference will examine the many interfaces between violent conflict and health, including increased spread of infectious disease, exploitation of vulnerable populations, degradation of the global environment, and prevention of violence through health promotion.

The Global Health Conference, sponsored by the UI Global Health Studies Program (GHSP), provides students an opportunity to participate in a professional conference addressing primary issues in global health. This year's conference will take place 3/28-3/30/2014. Speakers will be drawn from across the world and the US, and the course will provide an opportunity for students to hear first-hand from individuals who are actively improving global health. The seminar format allows face-to-face interactions. Students are challenged to connect the knowledge and skills they are obtaining in their coursework to world-wide health problems. Students will receive detailed information regarding their participation options at a pre-conference organizational meeting. Students who register for section SCA will attend the pre-conference meeting on 3/10/2014. Students who register for section SCB will attend the pre-conference meeting on 3/13/2014. All students will attend the conference together on 3/28-3/30. Grading will be based on attendance at all conference sessions and preparation of one of the following; a final paper, a poster, a fact sheet, or leadership in a roundtable discussion. Some meals and refreshments are provided for conference registrants.
